Retractable Hotsysnc Charging USB Data Cable + USB Car Charger + USB Home Travel Charger for Apple iPhone 3G / Apple iPhone 3GS

I bought this because the item description specifically stated that it would work with the iPhone 3G. The charger is reasonably priced and it shipped quickly - but it doesn't work with the iPhone 3Gs. When connected I get an error message and neither the wall unit or car adapter will charge the iPhone. From doing some further searching on the internet, I found that Apple has apparently changed the method of charging from the firewire (12V) pins on the docking connector to the USB power (5V) pins and also requires that the USB data sense pins have the correct voltage as well. The bottom line is that most of the adapters originally made for the iPod or earlier versions of the iPhone are not compatible with the iPhone 3Gs.

I bought this charger for my new iPhone 3GS, but my phone would not recognize it as an approved charger. However, my wife is able to use it for her iPhone 3G. I don't believe she has had a problem.

The plug in wall adapter that came in the kit is not compatable with the iPhone. When the USB cable is plugged into the wall adapter and the iphone the iphone displays an error that it is not a compatable accessory. This adapter is also different than the picture of the adapter on this Amazon site. I suspect it is an old version that was not tested with the iPhone 3Gs.

The car adapter works fine.

I got another wall adapter and it works fine with the USB cable from this kit.
