Product Review
Amazon.com Product Description

You've never heard sound this great from an FM transmitter this small before. The Kensington 33364 RDS FM Transmitter/Auto Charger for iPods plays your iPod wirelessly through your automobile's FM stereo, on any FM station, while simultaneously charging your iPod, making it ideal for listeners who want to enjoy their favorite songs with the quality of their vehicle stereos while driving.

This unit includes such features as Aerielle wireless technology for superior audio and noise filtration; ClearFM circuitry for richer lows, crisper highs, and better stereo separation; the utilization of your high-resolution iPod LCD screen for easy viewing of station information; and RDS FM technology. Radio Data Systems (RDS) is a sub-frequency of FM radio that gets sent along with a normal music signal, and allows text to be displayed on RDS-enabled radios. The Kensington patent-pending RDS FM Transmitter will digitize song information, such as song title and artist name, and send it via RDS to a car stereo along with the music. RDS is now available in various vehicle models offered by leading automakers, as well as many modern after-market car stereo systems.

The Kensington 33364 not only charges your iPod while it is in use, but includes an on/off switch to prevent battery drain. This transmitter has a black body and stainless-steel accents to complement your car's interior, a unique design to fit most hard-to-reach car power outlets, and easy-to-use pre-sets to lock in your favorite stations. Best of all, the unit requires no software, or cables and wires to your stereo, so playing your favorite iPod tunes in your car is as easy as 1-2-3.

Made for all iPods with a 30-pin dock connector except 3G iPods--including first- and second-generation iPod nanos as well as first-, second-, and fourth-generation iPods--the Kensington FM transmitter is backed by Kensington's 2-year warranty. User's should note the RDS feature requires the iPod nano or iPod video in order to function properly, although the FM transmitter will work with any of the above iPods.

Summary: Good for the price. 2008-10-06
Comment: I read some bad reviews about this item but for the price, it does the job. The volume is low and it does pick up a lot of interference but the solution to the interference problem was to put down the antenna of the car. I couldn't figure out the volume problem but it was better than listening to talk radio for 4 hours.

Summary: Not Worth The Trouble 2008-09-21
Comment: Poor Quality product. Long lag time between plugging in the transmitter before it is recognized and the ipod starts playing. Froze up on me several times and would not respond. However, the main problem is the signal tansmission is very weak and low quality. Has static and hiss regardlesss of how close I get it to the stereo and antenna, my scanner on my radio would not even pick up the station. And we only have about 12 radio stations in this part of Alaska, so background interference was not the problem.

Summary: Transmits and charges, but a hassle to use 2008-06-28
Comment: I bought this after my 33199 quit working (after almost two years of use). The first time I plugged this new one into my car and tried it out, I thought it was a pretty nifty update. But as I kept using it, I realized that unlike the old model, this one doesn't shut off when you unplug it or turn off the car (maybe I'm missing something, but 99% of the time, if you've been listening to your iPod using this transmitter in your car, wouldn't you want it to turn off when you turn the car off and thus can no longer hear it? I certainly do).

When you do plug it in or turn the car on, it keeps playing whatever song was on when you turned the iPod off, but it displays the Main Menu so if you want to look at the playlist you had been using, you have to re-navigate to it. But first you have to wait a few seconds while it displays the frequency you're on, which also seems pretty pointless because in most cases I would expect that you want to keep using whatever frequency you were using last. Perhaps more to the point, I do get static at times; it seems to change with the position of the iPod itself.

Are these the worst tribulations anyone's ever suffered? Of course not. But they weren't present in the old model, which is why I'm switching back to that one and I encourage you to do the same until Kensington makes this one function more smoothly and intuitively.

Summary: Looks good and does what it's supposed to do. 2008-06-10
Comment: Using the Kensington RDS transmitter in a 2004 Audi Cabriolet. The transmitter inserted to the cigarette lighter does not interfere with the arm rest. It has simple instructions for use. I programed three off station memories in the radio. Then programed the ipod nano for those frequencies and memorized them in the transmitter. The music sounds good to me and with three options for frequency, it's easily changed on the fly when needed. Most of all, this device looks OK in the car. No LED lights or hard to read LCD displays... just some brushed metal and black plastic. It works with the screen of the ipod Nano. The RDS really works, a few seconds delay, then the ipod's song/artist information is displayed on the Audi radio and in the center instrument display. Looks good, works good. May not be for everyone as it sticks out a bit more from the cigarette lighter than some transmitters, also if your car does not have RDS.... why buy it in the first place? Best option I could find without having an after market company put in an expensive ipod interface.
